GATE TO // Compositing Things

  • 12. Januar 2025 - 30. Januar 2025
Compositing Things explores the creative potential of using leftover and discarded materials. By combining and arranging these found objects, the work blurs the line between painting and installation. The project invites viewers to reconsider the relationships between material, space, and composition.
Hyojun Hyun was born in 1983 in Mungyeong, South Korea. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Hong-Ik University in Seoul in 2009 and his Masters of Fine Arts in 2013 from the Glasgow School of Art in Glasgow, Scotland. Upon graduation, Hyun was invited to conduct research on the topic of Modern Ruins at the Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, Netherlands. Shortly after completion of this residency in 2015, Hyun had a solo exhibition entitled, Strange Days at the House of Ergon Gallery in Berlin, Germany. Hyun decided to remain in Berlin from where he has been based ever since. While spending most of his time in Germany, Hyun continued to travel and complete independent projects internationally and spent significant time in places such as Amsterdam, Beirut, Glasgow, Prague and Trondheim. These diverse cultural experiences are sources of inspiration and have helped broaden his painting practice. Hyun is currently focused on Anonymous Leftovers, a new body of work inspired by his perception of the urban landscape throughout the many European cities he has lived and traveled through.
