GATE TO // Barbara Stepczynski

  • 3. Mai - 24. Mai

The installation ‚The Beauty of Individuality  and the Uncomfortable Diversity’ by Barbara Thoma will be on view at GATE TO space in the courtyard of Alte Münze from July 4 to July 31, 2026. It can be viewed from outside, day and night.

☆ Opening is on Saturday, July 4th ☆

This exhibition explores the beauty and complexity of cultural diversity in our society. It views individuality as something valuable that shapes and enriches our society made visible through graffiti, artistic uniqueness, and personal forms of expression.

Each artist brings their own story, their own language, and their own unique perspectives. From this diversity emerges a vibrant tapestry of identities and their uniqueness.

The exhibition poses a central question: Must beauty be orderly, pristine, and controlled? Or does it arise precisely where differences become visible?

The beauty of diversity is not always comfortable. It challenges us; it demands our openness and willingness to question familiar notions.

Historically, graffiti has been considered uncensored and illegal nonconformist. It pushes its way from the underground to the surface and makes diversity uncomfortable in a radical way.

At the same time, graffiti breaks with the classical concept of beauty.
For many people, it is not design, not beauty, but simply vandalism. It doesn’t belong here.

The exhibition views diversity not as a contrast, but as a connection a network of perspectives that spans people, cultures, and borders.
