Ephemeral Reveries through the Alchemy of Queerness
Over the span of two years with more than 60 queer performers across Berlin and Melbourne, Elizaveta Bogachova created a a slow-media project that creates a safe space for those who exist beyond the heteronormative guise. Photographs that don’t just look: they resist. The work reclaims visibility by transforming portraiture into an act of tenderness, care, and radical attention. As a queer artist and Ukrainian refugee of mixed origins, Elizaveta Bogachova intentionally rejects traditional power dynamics between photographer and “subject,” approaching each collaboration as a dialogue grounded in trust. The onset magic was created with light and analogue secrets of the past, allowing the tender intimacy of each story to emerge. Photographing queer, non-binary, and drag artists and performers, the work exists across prints, projections, and time-based forms. In its slow-media installation, portraits unfold at a controlled pace that returns agency to the performers, challenging the quick and passive consumption typical of photography exhibitions. With the vast amount of unedited materials, ongoing cinematic research, and a semiotic perspective on the empty sign of queerness, moreover, open upcoming collaborations, this project is ready to bloom in many forms as an evening primrose. Ephemeral Reveries is a call to pause, even for a moment, and to truly fall in love and carry in the heart the small bit of courageous beauty of those who have always deserved to be seen. Its careful, and accessible construction allows audiences to experience the work in multiple forms, revealing new layers of meaning with every encounter. This piece lets hidden histories to speak and their artistic voice to unfold in dialogue, reflection, and see the light.
