FLINTA* Voices: The Second Life by Sudeshna Dey
FLINTA* Voices create space to speak without restriction, without dilution, and without apology. We opened our platform to FLINTA* writers and creators who confront and redefine gendered realities, who understand empowerment not as a trend, but as necessity, and who expose patriarchy not as abstraction, but as lived experience.
The Second Life
In India, even today, a widow is often expected to live the rest of her life alone. Social taboos do not allow her to move forward into a new beginning. Even after Raja Ram Mohan Roy fought for and helped introduce laws for widows’ rights, society continues to deny many widows the chance to rebuild their lives.
My mother is a widow. I wished deeply that she would begin a new life again. But out of fear of relatives and social judgment, she could not move forward. I have seen one or two of my friends, after becoming widows, slowly forget how to live for themselves. They surrendered their desires, their joy, their individuality.
When one person passes away, why must the one who survives live like the dead? Indian men must step forward in these matters. Only then can this mindset truly change.
